At Velox, we thrive on continuous learning and self-improvement. This mindset extends beyond financial markets and into the real world, where lessons in resilience, curiosity, and hard work shape future success. Recently, members of our team, including JJ, Saarthak, and myself (Dimitri), had the privilege of mentoring young students from Mossbourne Community Academy, alongside Freddy, the founder of Cuuva, as well as Bethan and Anna from BBH London. It was an inspiring experience, reaffirming how much can be learned from young, ambitious minds and how the principles of success in business apply universally.
Key Learnings from Mentoring
As mentors, looking in gave us the opportunity to observe what traits make the difference. The students we mentored demonstrated a set of qualities that are directly transferable to any professional environment. These insights not only reinforced our own approach to business and risk-taking but also reminded us of the core values that drive success.
1. Grit and Resilience
The ability to persist through challenges, push forward despite setbacks, and maintain focus on long-term goals was evident in these students. Whether in finance, entrepreneurship, or creative industries, grit is often the differentiator between those who succeed and those who don’t.
2. Passion and Purpose
The students who excelled showed a genuine passion for their ambitions. This is a lesson we see reflected in successful individuals across industries—when work is driven by purpose, it ceases to be a burden and becomes a fulfilling journey.
3. Hard Work and Willingness to Go the Extra Mile
A consistent theme in our discussions was the value of effort beyond what is required. Whether it was staying late to refine a project, preparing questions in advance, or proactively seeking additional opportunities, the students showcased the power of hard work in achieving excellence.
4. Desire to Learn and Adaptability
The best students demonstrated an insatiable curiosity and a hunger to improve. In any fast-moving industry, adaptability and a desire to learn new skills set individuals apart. The most successful people, regardless of field, are those who never stop learning.
5. Anticipation and Proactiveness
Anticipating challenges before they arise and proactively seeking solutions is a crucial skill. Many of the students instinctively applied this approach in their problem-solving exercises, a skill that directly translates into strategic thinking in professional settings.
6. Asking for Help and Seeking Mentorship
One of the most underrated skills we observed was the students’ willingness to seek guidance and use available resources. Too often, professionals hesitate to ask for help, yet those who do often accelerate their growth and development significantly.
7. Teamwork and Allocation of Responsibilities
Success is rarely a solo endeavor. The students showcased the ability to work collaboratively, allocate responsibilities effectively, and come together to achieve a shared goal. Strong teamwork fosters creativity, efficiency, and resilience—key qualities in any professional setting. One of the most underrated skills we observed was the students’ willingness to seek guidance and use available resources. Too often, professionals hesitate to ask for help, yet those who do often accelerate their growth and development significantly.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Professional Success
What stood out most was how these lessons, learned early, could significantly shape future success. The qualities we saw in the students are the same ones we prioritize in our own work at Velox. The importance of discipline, mentorship, and continuous learning transcends industries, proving that the foundations of success are universally applicable.
For us, the mentoring experience was a reminder that talent is abundant, but opportunity and guidance can make all the difference. The students at Mossbourne Community Academy showed us that with the right mindset, there is no limit to what they can achieve.
A special congratulations to Eniola, Adie, Shania, Finlay, Nicolas, and Karol for going all the way, winning The Grocers Company Cup, and making it to The Livery Academy Awards final at Mansion House, hosted by the Lord Mayor—lifting the trophy at the end! Your determination, teamwork, and drive are truly inspiring, and we couldn't be prouder of your achievement.
We look forward to continuing this journey of learning and mentorship—because the best lessons are often the ones you don’t expect to learn yourself.
